Best Water Sports For Non-Swimmers In The Maldives – The Last One Will Surprise You

Imagining the Maldives, the very first thing which comes to everyone’s mind is long stretches of beaches with tons of different water activities happening all around. Seeing everyone’s Instagram moments from the Maldives, it is easy to assume that the non-swimmers in the Maldives have nothing to do on a beach holiday except sipping coconut water! But that is contrary to reality. The exhilarating water activities in the Maldives can be equally enjoyed by someone who doesn’t know how to swim.

I visited the Maldives last year and that time I only knew how to float on the water! Much like every other non-swimmer going to the Maldives, I assumed and also prepared myself for clicking pictures and observing people on the beach while they enjoy doing adventurous water activities, which I won’t be doing. But to my surprise, when I reached the water sports center of the Paradise Island Resort where I was staying for the trip, I got to know there is a lot do as a non-swimmer in the Maldives.

Jet-Skiing

Jet-Skiing activity in action in the Maldives

Do you need to be able to swim to jet-ski? I have heard this question time and again and the answer to it is a big NO! No, you don’t need to be able to swim to jet-ski. Jet-skiing was the first water activity I did in the Maldives and no it doesn’t require any swimming skills at all. You will be given a short training before venturing into the sea directly. Moreover, you will be wearing a life jacket all the time so there are no chances of drowning.

I saw many non-swimmers in the Maldives dreading initially when they sat on the jet-ski but as soon as they got into the flow of it, there was no stopping! Also, most of the resort islands in the Maldives are surrounded by heavy rocks to break the current of the water, so water will be kind to you. Also, you only get to ski in a protected area with lifeguards onboard.

Parasailing

Parasailing is all about sailing above the water and not in the water; therefore it is no-brainers that it can be easily done by a non-swimmer in the Maldives. Parasailing was one of the most awaited water activities of my entire trip to the Maldives. The water sports center team did not even ask me about my swimming skills for parasailing. All of the adventure sports by the resorts are operated by professionally licensed operators so you’re pretty much in very safe hands.

You will be wearing a life jacket for every activity and that’s enough for your safety in normal circumstances. Witnessing the beautiful turquoise water of the Maldives while sailing above the ocean is an unmatched experience. So, if you’re a non-swimmer in the Maldives, parasailing should definitely be in your bucket list!

 Kayaking

Kayaking in the Indian Ocean

Not swimming skills but kayaking requires strong arms! Kayaking is the best activity to do for any non-swimmer in the Maldives. Clearly, this water activity does not demand any swimming skills at all. The resort I stayed at, the Paradise Island Resort offers free kayaking to all the guests in the resort. If not for free, but many resorts in the Maldives offer kayaking. This is one of those activities which can be enjoyed by the big and the small ones too. You won’t really get to do kayaking in the Indian Ocean very often, so when in the Maldives, make the most out of your time by kayaking there.

Sea-Bobbing

This one right here might not be known to many but trust me a sea bob is a best friend of the non-swimmer. But you may ask what the heck a sea bob is? Allow me to educate you… a sea bob is an electric underwater scooter, used to explore the surface of the sea or beneath it. So for the non-swimmers in the Maldives, a sea bob is the best way to fulfill your dream of swimming in the turquoise waters of the Maldives!

The scooter comes in the shape of a fish which you grab on to while floating in the water, much like snorkeling. The motored scooter’s speed can be easily controlled from a knob installed on the handle to which you will be holding on to. And that’s it, you’re good to go! For the non-swimmers, it is recommended to stay on the surface and experience swimming at a high speed. The sea bob is every non-swimmer ultimate dream, right?

Water Tube

An epic fall from the water tube

An advanced version of the Banana boat, a water tube is hands down one of the most fun activity for the non-swimmers to do. It is a big floated round shape tube which is tied with a jet ski. All you need to do is to lie on the tube holding it from the straps at the top and that’s it. A water center’s staff member will be riding the Jet Ski pulling you all over the ocean where you will jump lying on the tube while hitting a wave.

If the Jet Ski is in a high speed, there is a huge probability of you losing control and eventually falling in the water, but nothing to fret you will be wearing a life jacket at all times. It might seem a little intimidating at first but if done, trust me it will be the most fun adventure you will have in your entire trip to the Maldives!

Snorkeling Lesson

‘You have to know how to swim to snorkel’, tell me how many times a non-swimmer must have had heard this? But now you can snorkel in the Maldives without knowing how to swim by taking the snorkeling lesson. Yes, you read that right, a snorkeling lesson for the non-swimmer! The Paradise Island Resort water activities team has a snorkeling lesson activity for all of those non-swimmers in the Maldives. This activity is such a lifesaver for anyone who is upset for not being able to try snorkeling in the Maldives being a non-swimmer.

The one-hour snorkeling lesson is conducted by one of the professionally trained staffs from the water center’s team, who not only teaches you how to wear and use the snorkeling gear but also teaches you the basic freestyle swimming skills like how to move your hands and legs during the lesson. Also, it is a practical lesson meaning that it is conducted in the shallow waters and not just a verbal orientation. After taking this snorkeling lesson it is safe to say, that any non-swimmer can confidently snorkel in the shallow waters without fear. How great does it feel to check-off snorkeling in the Maldives being a non-swimmer? Amazing, right?

How Much Water Sports Cost in The Maldives?

The water activities for non-swimmers in the Maldives shared above are all from my personal experience at the Paradise Island Resort in the Maldives. The water sports center on the resort is managed by Adventure Maldives Company, who has different bundled packages for the activities and individual activities as well. I opted for a bundled package of five activities worth USD 350, with kayaking as a free activity offered from the resort.

The prices for the water sports in the Maldives differ from resort to resort, but usually, it is more on an expensive end as the Maldives is not a cheap destination. However, you can always contact the resort prior to making a booking and ask them regarding the water activities with prices for that particular resort.

If water sports are not your thing, consider having a Private Sandbank Picnic in Maldives. In all cases, when in the Maldives, do not forget to pack your best beach blanket!

I hope this post has given some inspiration to the non-swimmers in the Maldives and not having enough confidence to try out the water activities there.
