Alhama De Granada, Southern Spain

When you think of Southern Spain and the Andalucia region, it usually conjures images of the crowded beaches of the Costa Del Sol or the picturesque, but often overcrowded, whitewash villages along the coast.

To gain a more authentic experience, why not travel inland to the delightful traditional, Moorish influenced hilltop town of Alhama de Granada, which is around 50km away from the City of Granada. The seriously windy roads on the drive up are so worth negotiating, which makes it one of the most underrated summer destinations in Spain.

The old town is surrounded by fortress walls which look over a steep drop into a stunning gorge.  Make sure you allow enough time to walk down into the gorge itself and explore the old flour mills and winding trails.  It offers some welcome shade in the hot months and there are even a couple of spots that are good for a little dip in the river that runs through.

Must dos: If you like to be pampered, just outside the town there is a famous Spa that is served by the thermal waters of the area (only open during the peak summer months though). Stop in the local square and enjoy some tapas whilst watching the sleepy life of the town pass you by.

Ladakh, India

Ladakh or La dags—the Land of Mountain Passes—is rugged, beautiful, and the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate in the summer. Located in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, extending from the Kunlun Mountains to the Great Himalayas, the sun blesses the land for only about four months (June-September) while freezing solid for the rest of the year when temperatures drop to as low as minus forty degrees.

The region is home to a thriving Buddhist population. You will immediately observe the easy happiness of its people, and hopefully, take home some of it. There are also many, many gorgeous Buddhist temples where you can sit in quiet reflection. A vast majority of Ladakhis are self-supporting farmers, living in small settlements scattered in the high desert. Leh is the region’s capital, home to a growing urban population.

Be amazed at every turn, because the land offers arduous mountain routes and sudden delights: melting snow on craggy brown slopes; a burst of flora and fauna in midst of unyielding rocks; gurgling streams sprouting from the mighty Indus and Zanskar rivers; a tribe of shepherds making a hot meal in a cave; some of the most spectacular sunsets on tranquil, endless lakes that seem to change colour every hour; the wonders are countless.

Must dos: If the Ladakh Marathon is happening, give it a try. Or go during the July Hemis Monastery festival. Then hire a car and drive around, making sure to visit Pangong Tso, Nubra Valley, and Khardungla—among the highest motorable passes in the world.

Zamboanga, Philippines

The Philippines is already a popular summer destination in Southeast Asia, but tourists usually just loop around the usual spots including Bohol, Cebu, Boracay and Palawan. Another great vacation spot for the summer that is often overlooked can be found in the south of this country – Zamboanga City.

The underrated summer destination of Zamboanga City is a highly urbanized city and it sits close to various natural attractions. Summer vacationers can visit the Great Sta. Cruz Island, also known as the Pink Beach due to the pinkish hue of its sand when wet. Another option is to island hop in Once Islas, a group of 11 islands recently opened for island hopping and cultural tours. For those who love the jungle, the 10-meter high Merloquet Falls is worth a visit just 1.5-2 hours away.

Must dos: For people who love exploring cities, Zamboanga City offers walking tours to see its heritage houses and historical buildings. For those who love food trips, it has a number of local restaurants that serve Filipino, Malay, Spanish and local dishes from the tribes in the area.

With the many interesting things to do in Zamboanga City, it’s a great option for those who are on a summer holiday.

South Korea

South Korea - underrated summer destinations

Korea is often forgotten when planning summer holidays as it lies between two super popular destinations, namely China and Japan. South Korea, a much smaller country, is only known for its relationship with North Korea and Kpop. Little do people know that it is a beautiful country filled with historic sights, stunning beaches, delicious food, and ski resorts that make it to the list of underrated summer destinations of the world.

There is something to see all year round but during summer, it is recommended to visit Jeju Island, Busan and the east coast to enjoy the beaches, surfing, the sea breeze. It is recommended to stay at least 7 days in Korea and if possible longer. During 7 days it is possible to visit at least 2 or 3 different cities.

The temperatures during the summer in South Korea can reach 40°C and the air is rather humid, therefore spending time swimming or at the beach is rather pleasant. The best thing to eat during summer is Naengmyeon, made with chewy noodles made out of buckwheat and served with cucumber, pear and ice cubes. Great to cool down during lunch times.

Must dos: Sikke is a Korean rice drink that is very refreshing as well for summer days. The sweet drink is made with barley malt powder and rice. Definitely look out for sipping Sikke to beat the summer heat in Korea.

Belize

Belize in South America

With one foot in the Central American jungles and the other in the Caribbean Sea, little Belize packs a serious punch with its exotic islands, rich Caribbean culture, amazing local food and seafood and a plethora of activities. The only country in Central America that has English as their official language, it is only a 2hour flight from Miami and offers all the postcard beauty of the Caribbean at a lesser price.

With a total of 450 islands, you can spend your days kayaking, sunbathing, windsurfing, paddle boarding, and fishing. Combine this with delicious Belizean food: little barbecue beach huts that cook freshly caught lobster and seafood right in front of your eyes and you’ve got THE perfect tropical vacation.

The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest Barrier Reef in the World and with more than 100 types of coral and 500 species of tropical fish, it’s pure paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers. Experienced divers can also dive into the ‘’Great Blue Hole’’ – a true natures wonder and a UNESCO Heritage Site!

Must dos: With a rounded shape and a depth of over 124m, it is amongst the ten top diving spots in the world – where divers witness a dark cave with impressive stalactites as well as Caribbean Reef Sharks and other shark species. Nature enthusiasts will also love its 500 bird species, jaguars, crocodiles, black howler monkeys, and exotic parrots.

Belize is a dream, an undiscovered underrated summer destination that will leave you breathless!

Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Phoenix in USA

Phoenix Arizona is the best city to visit in the United States during the summer for many reasons. The primary one being that prices are incredibly low because the heat is a bit hot. But have no fears – it is dry heat! While the summer months can see heat above 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, mornings and evenings dip back down to cooler temperatures.

Take advantage of the discount hotels and their pools while you are in town visiting. Some of the top attractions include: the Desert Botanical Garden (go early before it gets hot), a sunrise hot air balloon ride, enjoy one of the many spas in the area, the Heard Museum, enjoy the desert sunsets, and make sure to eat all the amazing ice cream in the city.

One of my favorite activities in Phoenix is seeing all the vibrant street art. There are several murals throughout the city done by incredible artists and they truly add character. You will find street art in areas with several murals, so you won’t have to walk far.

Must dos: A great day trip from the city (20 minutes away) is to Mesa, Arizona. You can visit Queen Creek Olive Mill and learn all about how they make olive oil, do a tasting, see all the goods they sell and buy to your hearts content. While in Mesa – make sure and get a PB&J brisket sandwich from Jalapeno Bucks!

Batumi, Georgia

Batumi (Georgia the country)

Not many people from outside the region consider Batumi, Georgia a great but definitely underrated summer destination. It is an excellent place to spend your summer holidays in. Located at the shore of the Black Sea, Batumi has everything you wish for: hot summer, long and wide beach (although it could have been better as they are mostly with stones), great vibe, hospitable locals and the most delicious food ever!

Batumi is a place like no other. The capital of the autonomous region of Adjara is a mix of old and new, and those contrasts make a unique summer destination. Once you are tired with the typical beach activities, you can go to the nearby botanical garden – a pleasant oasis of nature – or visit the nearby lush mountains.

For the young ones, a visit to the local dolphinarium is always a joyful experience. In the evening the favorite activity of both locals and tourists is strolling up and down the long seaside promenade where the whole action takes place.

Must dos: Among all the delicious food Georgia offer don’t miss Adjarian khachapuri, the Batumi region is famous for – the boat-shaped bread with raw egg and a slice of butter in the middle. It tastes much better than it sounds!

There are many reasons to visit Batumi, no matter which one you choose, you’re in for exceptional holidays!

Mazurian Region, Poland

Poland-underrated summer destinations

Last years, Poland has been gaining higher places in many rankings of destinations to visit for both: tourists and digital nomads. This Central European country has a lot to offer: diverse landscapes from seashore to mountains, cities full of history, and delicious food. But since Warsaw, Cracov, Gdańsk or Wrocław, usually entice the majority of travelers, there are still a few amazing Polish regions, that may become a part of the perfect underrated summer destinations.

One of my very favorites is the Mazurian region. In Poland, we often call it the Land of a Thousand Lakes. And it’s for a good reason. Wonderful lakes cover the whole landscape, including the biggest lake in the country – Åšniardwy Lake.

Mazury is a very popular summer destination for Polish, but it is not so well-known among foreign travelers. But it surely has a lot to offer. The region is a perfect place to collect first sailing experiences. Many lakes are connected with each other and everywhere we can find charming marinas, smaller or bigger, to moor a yacht. We can choose among lively places filled with other sailors, music, shanties, and fests. Or we can spend our time at a small, private kea, where the local bosun will treat us with some Mazurian delicacies and tell us a few fascinating stories by a bonfire.

Must dos: For people who prefer land activities, Mazury offers beautiful cycle tours, horse rides, trekking and discovering of history in old-time buildings hidden in deep Polish forests. No one will be disappointed.

Cook Islands

By Lisa of Rebellious Tourist

Cook islands- Underrated summer destinations

We got so many blank stares when we told people we were going to the Cook Islands. These tiny dots in the middle of the South Pacific are a popular holiday destination from New Zealand, but virtually unheard-of everywhere else in the world – overlooked in favor of more famous islands like Bora Bora, Tahiti, and Fiji.

But that makes the Cooks even better. You won’t struggle to find locally-owned boutique hotels and world-class food, but there are no chain resorts here, no obscenely overpriced overwater bungalows.

Summer here is from November to March. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, June to September is a good time to go. The weather is cooler (19-25°C) but there’s less chance of rain, prices are lower and the beaches are quieter. The main island, Rarotonga, has some stunning stretches of sand and reef. But make the extra trip to the smaller island of Aitutaki and you’re even closer to paradise. The islets in Aitutaki’s turquoise lagoon are impossibly beautiful and surprisingly tourist-free.

Must dos: There’s a strong sense of Maori culture – don’t miss ‘island nights’ for a unique experience of Polynesian music and dancing. My advice: try everything from the buffet. Ika Mata, in particular, is a delicious Cook Islands version of ceviche.

South Moravia, Czech Republic

By Liz of Little Holidays

South Moravia in Czech

Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors. If you’re looking for an offbeat experience away from the hordes of tourists that gather in popular cities, you should head to South Moravia. This little-known destination is the Czech Republic’s gorgeous wine region and an excellent spot for a summer holiday.

As a wine region, you can expect endless vineyards in South Moravia. The castle town of Mikulov is a great starting point for bike trails through vineyards and rows of wine cellars. The hiking trails that bring you through castle ruins, old chapels, and stunning viewpoints. You can also spend the day walking around the small town, hiking up the Holy Hill, and exploring the castle. These are enough reasons to visit this gem on the underrated summer destinations list.

From Mikulov, the Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape is a short 15-minute drive away. Both towns have well-preserved chateaux and gardens that are vibrant with color during the summer. Also, there are plenty of restaurants serving traditional Czech and Moravian dishes.

If you’re searching for a busier, bigger-city feel, head to Brno. This city is the birthplace of functionalist architecture, has a bustling coffee culture, and a hip food scene. South Moravia is beautiful year-round, but especially gorgeous during summer. The end of summer is a particularly great time to visit South Moravia. If you love wine and festivals as this is when the towns celebrate the harvest.

Must dos: Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, venture out into the vineyards and forest trails, and bring home a bottle of wine!

Indonesia

Indonesia- underrated summer destinations

While Bali is bursting at the seams with tourists, most of the other 17,000 islands that make up Indonesia are completely undiscovered. My husband and I explored just seven of the islands — Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Bali, Lombok, Flores and Sumba — and that alone took us four months.

Indonesia is a vast country in Southeast Asia, and infrastructure is poor, so prepare for long, bumpy bus rides. But if you make the effort, you will be rewarded with intricately carved temples, astounding landscapes, magical wildlife encounters, and fascinating local festivals. The locals may be surprised to see you, but they will give you a warm welcome. You will hear shouts of “Hello, Mister!” everywhere you go, regardless of your gender.

We were lucky to catch a festival at Lake Kerinci in Central Sumatra, that just happened to be taking place while we were there. Also, we happened to be the only two foreigners at the event and got VIP treatment from the locals, who were very excited to see us. We also attended a mass cremation ceremony in Bali, which was unforgettable.

Must dos: There is so much to see in Indonesia that it’s hard to narrow it down. The top highlights for me are the ninth-century Buddhist stupa at Borobudur, the climb up to the volcanic crater of Mt. Rinjani, orangutan sightings in Bukit Lawang on Sumatra, and taking part in local festivals.

Milwaukee in USA - underrated summer destinations

The big little city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin is often overlooked as a summer vacation destination in favor of Chicago to the south. While Milwaukee might not have a big shiny bean like Chicago has, there are a lot reasons to visit during the summertime.

The biggest reason is Summerfest, the world’s largest outdoor music festival that takes place along the lakefront every summer. Music artists from around the world come to Milwaukee for an 11-day long concert in early July.

Even if you miss the big music event, Milwaukee is still worth a visit. The weather is at it’s best from June through September in Wisconsin making it an ideal time for a visit. The lakefront and the restaurants along the river come to life with music, fun, and of course beer.

Must dos: The brewery scene in Milwaukee is on point. Which makes sense because the city has a long history of brewing and beer culture. One of the best things you can do in the summertime in Milwaukee is take a river boat cruise between the different breweries on the river.

No matter what you are into Milwaukee has something for just about every traveler and deserves a spot on your summer travel plans. It offers every reason to be on this list of underrated summer destinations waiting to be explored!

Geelong, Australia

Geelong Australia-underrated summer destinations

Australia is well-known around the world as a summer holiday destination, but the popular tourist spots can be busy crowded places. So, we recommend visitors head to our hometown Geelong in the state of Victoria for a more relaxed vacation.

The city is a favourite with domestic holiday makers but is less well-known amongst international visitors, so it’s perfect for those looking for an authentic Australian experience. Geelong is Victoria’s second largest city, but it has a distinct small-town vibe with friendly locals and a chilled-out atmosphere.

Geelong has all the reasons to be in the list of underrated summer destinations. This is a bayside city with a spectacular waterfront that draws visitors from around the country and summer is the perfect time to enjoy its attractions. The whole area is covered with beautifully manicured lawn where families gather for picnics, barbeques, cricket matches and games of footy.

The area known as Eastern Beach is where everyone comes for old fashioned summer fun. There are diving boards, water features, a toddler pool and art-deco pavilion. A highlight of the area is the fabulous promenade that’s perfect for a sunset stroll.

Must dos: The Geelong Waterfront is home to gourmet restaurants, cool cafes and hip bars. And it buzzes with summer festivals, markets, and sporting events. Mix it all together for a ‘hot’ summer holiday destination.

Rapid City, USA

Rapid City is one of my favorite cities in the US and it is a completely underrated summer destination. To be honest, it is not what I count as a popular summer holiday destination! But it should be! Whether you are traveling as a family or couple, and for if you like quirky attractions or the outdoors, Rapid City literally has something on offer for everyone!

Within the city, travelers will enjoy the presidential walk, dinosaur park and for children the fab storybook island! Dinosaur Park dates back to the 1930s and was created to capitalize on the tourists that were in the vicinity to visit Mount Rushmore. The park contains seven dinosaur statues on a hill overlooking the city and is now on the National Historic Register of Places.

It is truly a brilliant place to base yourself to get a lot of things ticked off your bucket list! I have no idea why it is so underrated, but if you decide to visit you like me will come away singing its praises

Must dos: The attractions near Rapid city are actually the things that draw people to Rapid city as there is an abundance of natural wonders at your fingertips. The popular spots include Custer state park, the Badlands National Park and the famous Mount Rushmore!  The wildlife is amazing the attractions are truly unique!
